LOCATION | China, Maine
This impressive custom timber frame barn in China, Maine was crafted by Kennebec Timber Framing, whose striking post and beam structure defines both the architecture and experience of the space.
Designed to serve as a place for gathering, entertaining, and showcasing a collection of vintage vehicles, the barn combines traditional New England barn design with modern building performance. The exposed timber structure creates dramatic interior volumes while celebrating the craftsmanship of hand-built timber framing.
Timber Framing as the Architectural Centerpiece
At the heart of the building is the spectacular post and beam frame by Kennebec Timber Framing, where massive timbers, braces, and trusses create a cathedral-like interior. The structure itself becomes the primary design feature, bringing warmth, scale, and rhythm to the space.
Lofted areas, soaring ceilings, and a dramatic central volume highlight the craftsmanship of the timber frame while creating flexible spaces for gatherings and everyday use.
A sweeping curved staircase connects the lower level to lofted spaces above, offering a sculptural contrast to the structural geometry of the timber frame.
A Modern Barn Built for Gathering
While rooted in traditional barn architecture, the building was designed for contemporary use. The large interior includes open gathering areas, a kitchen and dining space, sleeping lofts, and recreational areas, making the barn equally suited for everyday use or hosting large groups.
The structure is fully insulated using a custom insulated panel system, allowing the large timber frame building to remain comfortable and energy efficient year-round.
A Barn Designed for the Landscape
Situated in an open meadow near China Lake, the barn was carefully positioned to take advantage of the surrounding landscape. Views extend across the field and toward a nearby pond, giving the building a strong connection to the site.
The exterior reflects classic New England barn forms with a modern interpretation. A double-gabled roofline is punctuated by three cupolas that bring natural light into the building and create a distinctive silhouette across the landscape.
Inside and out, the project celebrates the beauty of traditional craftsmanship while adapting the barn form for contemporary living and entertaining.
